Memphis Area Legal Services is the primary provider of civil legal representation to low income families in West Tennessee. With Tennessee having the fourth highest poverty rate of any state in the country, it should not be a surprise that the need for assistance is tremendous. Memphis Area Legal Services helps families facing critical, sometimes life-threatening, situations such as:

  • Domestic Violence
  • Homelessness
  • Wrongful denial of health care, food stamps, unemployment compensation, family assistance
  • Consumer fraud
  • Special challenges of children and the elderly

The recent Tennessee study conducted by the University of Memphis College of Social Work, Office of Research and Public Service found that MALS has sufficient resources to meet less than 5% of the civil legal needs of West Tennessee’s low income families.
